Lions led by donkeys
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007Continuing the remembrance theme a little, I went to see Lions for Lambs last night. The title is a corruption of the famous phrase Lions led by donkeys referring to the British infantry in the first world war (the lions) and an the incompetent generals who led them (the donkeys).
So anyway, the film is directed by Robert Redford, who also plays the part of a university professor trying to get through to a young, very bright kid who’s opting out of trying to make a difference. I liked it a lot. Out of all the characters, the powerful, the noble, the clever, the committed, the driven, the courageous, and the morally bankrupt - the one I empathised with most was the university kid. What is the point, after all? Let the evil wankers get on with it, and leave me alone to live as I want. Good luck to you all, I’m off to live in Chamonix and spend my time skiing. I’m such a child of Thatcher’s 80s.

It’s a good film, though - well worth seeing, if perhaps not paying £10 to go and see in the cinema.
