CerosMedia 2.0

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I haven’t been writing my blog this week not because I’ve fallen into a crevasse, but because I’ve been writing code. This was no pineapple birth. OK, so there was some raised voices at the end, but c’est normale huh? This puppy went live the day it was supposed to. And how.

This is the best website I’ve ever made. It wasn’t designed by me, or even conceived by me, but I made it. I based the functionality on an up to date drupal 6.2 installation. Messed with it as little as possible. Changed look and feel and added new flash/drupal integration technology that has hitherto only been thought of. Never done. Which is where my fee comes in. I can’t say how much it costs to build a website like the one below, but it’s non-trivial to me.

Have a look at the website now - and tell us…. by contacting cerosmedia.com or listingslab. Were you entertained?

A follow up to an unsual conversation

I really love blogging sometimes. Today I received this response from my previous post about Israel, which is by far the best and most informative comment I’ve ever received on this blog. It’s given me a huge, targeted and detailed insight into a question that has been interesting me for weeks in a way which I might not have found out on my own by simply researching it on google for 30 minutes (which is about the largest extent I look into anything these days).

So thank-you M. I’d love to see this blog become more of a discussion and less of a diatribe, but I guess that’s down to me to write about more interesting topics :)

Got an Intel Mac?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Bored of Firefox running really slowly? I am. The same flash application on a PC on IE7, Firefox and even in Apple’s Safari browser runs twice as quickly.

It’s probably because I’m a flash developer, building and testing heavy flash applications, but Firefox 2’s slowness has been bothering me for a while.  But even if you’re not a geek  you might get frustrated looking at videos on Youtube in Firefox, or waiting for new tabs to open and sort themselves out. If so, I have something that’ll make your day.

Why is it slow? Because the official releases of Firefox for OSX are not yet optimised for the Intel based systems. They will be soon no doubt, but for the moment there is another solution…. A very nice ubergeek called Neil Bruce Lee, who obviously knows what he’s doing, has created an unofficial release of Firefox called BonEcho which IS optimised for Intel machines and can be downloaded from here.

Firefox For Intel Macs

It’s brilliant - it’s just the same as your other Firefox (with the exception of the icons etc because although Firefox is open source, the official branding can’t be used on un-official releases) - you’ll still have your favourites/plug-ins/whatever else you use, it’s just that your Internet browser will be twice as quick! Brilliant!

Screen real estate

Friday, February 1st, 2008

If you use computers at work, or even just at home, you’ll be constantly minimising, maximising and generally moving windows about to get at whatever you want to be working on.
Even though I have got 2 screens on my computer, and can open up lots of windows and spread them about a bit, I still get frustrated with not having enough room to work. I’m generally working on lots of different things at once, often for many different clients at the same time. That’s on top of all the normal crap I have open, like the BBC radio player, Skype, email and other apps.

That’s where Spaces comes in. It’s a new feature in Mac’s OSX Leopard release. In essence it allows you to create multiple desktops and flick easily between them. So for instance, lets say I am working for a particular client and one of my other clients asks me to do some emergency quick fix. Instead of closing down everything on my screen and having to reopen it all when I’m done I can just create a new space, do the work in that one, and when I’ve finished everything is still set up for me to quickly go back to what I was doing before. It does take a while to get used to, but it’s proving to be the most useful new thing I’ve started using in years.

No idea what I’m talking about? Watch this vid, then. It’s the slickety slick Apple explanation of what Spaces is.
