The Mosquito Coast, by Paul Theroux

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

I’ve just finished reading The Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux and it’s a book I’d like to recommend to all. It was first published in 1981 but contains surprisingly up to date themes about global warming, fossil fuels and environmental/social concerns. It’s interesting to see that these things are not as new as we’d assume them to be.

It’s the story of a man, a genius inventor called Allie Fox who takes his family away from America to abandon civilization and live on the Mosquito Coast of Honduras. To begin with you feel like it’s all possible. We can change: abandon our fossil fuels, our wastefulness and self-deceit about the unsustainability of mankind. But like anyone who takes on the world, soon Allie starts to loose his battle to remain sane. To be fair he’s obviously fairly mental from the moment we meet him, but the story follows his descent into madness in the jungle.

Beaten by life, man and nature and mad as a box of frogs he might be. But he never gives up. For me that makes it an amazing read.

Just the kind of day I needed

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Since the skiing finished I’ve been working pretty hard to get back on top of all my client work. I finally got there yesterday. All loose ends tied up as much as they can be, and I was exhausted. The idea of sitting in front of the computer all day appalled me, but it’s been rainingtorrentially here in Chamonix for almost a week now, and there’s not much to do here when the weather’s bad. So Sarah and I came up with a great idea, and drove over to Switzerland to go to the Spa at Lavey les Bains.

It was just what I needed. Geo-thermally heated water feeding a big pool system. 3 hours of lazing about in the jacuzzis, saunas and pools. There was even a sensory deprivation room - A darkened room with comfortable seats where you just hang out and listen to whale music. Perfect.

Spas. My new favourite thing, and apparently there are quite a few of them up here in the Alps. It’s my mother’s idea of heaven. I can’t wait for her to visit again so I can take her to one.

May Day Bank holiday

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

This is where it all ends. It’s May Day bank holiday and is now officially- at last- Spring. At least after the weekend, when it’s the grande montets freeride day. Loads of fun, and probably quite drunken. Plus the after parties that night. Wicked.

In France, on MayDay (aside from not a shred of work getting done, natch), the traditional thing to do is to buy a posy of spring flowers from one of the many people selling them in the streets. I think you enjoy them for a day and then plant them outside to start off your garden for the spring. Here’s mine.

Environmental research

So I watched Al Gore’s film. And liked it! Yeh! I was surprised too. I was expecting something quite….. American. And not in a good way. What I got was quite Amercan and in a very good way. It was slickly presented and not boring. The science was delivered from the mouth of a trained and successful politician. Someone who knows how to connect on the widest possible level. I connected and I learned. So my environmental tip for today is to download and watch the film. If you’re not into Internet piracy, then please buy the DVD from this website (or wherever) and watch it. Please do that. You won’t be disappointed.

And my lasting aftertaste from the film? I can’t believe how close we came to having an American president who would have changed.the.world. He’s so passionate about this subject there is no way that wouldn’t have come through during an Al Gore administration. Instead we’ve had 8 years of that puppet/muppet George W Bush. What a wasted opportunity. OK, so that first election was tight. And it went down to the wire, to the Floridian and then the highest courts in the land. But shame on you America for re-electing that retard the second time around.

However. Do NOT under any circumstances, subscribe to the RSS news feed from that site. It’s dreadful. I signed up a couple of days ago and got 40-50+ feeds into my reader. All of which cite death, destruction and general horribleness. That way madness lies. Learn about this stuff, this environmental science. It’s the only way to understand your own contribution to it, and be able to have an effect. But don’t let’s get carried away. We’re still human. Still people. We still have to get drunk, have sex, fight and frolick. Otherwise it’s boring.
