October Blues

I haven’t really got the blues, but I’d be happy if October finished nice and quickly this year. I don’t get the keys to my new place in Le Tour until November, so until then I’ve just got a lot of work to do and not much fun to look forward to. Having said that, it did snow the other night. I woke up in Les Houches on Saturday morning with 2 inches of snow covering all the roves in the village. It’s unusual to have such an early snowfall, but obviously it’s all melted away now.

I went up to have a look at the new place last week. Sarah’s still away and I thought it would be nice for her to see some photos of the place so she can start looking forward to living there. I’ve only seen the place once and I was with the estate agent, having to concentrate hard on speaking French. So this time I just had a little walk around the village to get a feel for where the chalet is and what it’s like. It’s beautiful. The chalet is called Les Posettes and it’s very old. It’s in a village of other similar houses which are all so old that they are not linked up with roads wide enough for cars. I guess they were built before 4×4’s were thought of.

I just can’t wait to move to the peace and tranquility of Le Tour. No bars, no restaurants, no shops of any kind. Just the occasional church bell and the lowing of the cattle to disturb the peace. I’ll be spending most of November getting the place ready for the winter. It’s unfurnished, so I’ll need to mission to horrible Ikea to get beds etc, plumb in a washing machine & dishwasher. I’ll get a big freezer too so we can cool larger quantities and keep ourselves well fed without having to drive to the supermarket in the next town so often.

Ah, yes, getting back to basics: stone cottage, mountain valley, lowing cattle, sharpening the ski edges. :)
