Which left is right?
When I’m out skiing I often hear people describe a route down the mountain using the term ’skiers left’ or ’skiers right’. Now to me it seems pretty obvious which way is left and which way is right. I often wondered why people bothered to use the extra word. I found out in the pub last night.
The opposite of ’skier’s right’ is ‘climber’s right’. Skiers are generally facing down the mountain looking at where they’re about to ski. Climbers are generally interested in facing towards the mountain because they’re struggling their way up it. To them, right is most definitely wrong. This is because climbers are quite weird ![]()
