Facebook goes loud
I deleted my account from facebook a couple of weeks ago. I explored it enough to understand it’s addictiveness and how and why people use it, and also because I have a few social network type site ideas gestating but in the end it just got on my nerves so I vanished myself.
Then today I came across this news story.
Facebook opens profiles to public
The function will initially allow anyone who is not registered with the site to search for a specific person. More controversially, in a month’s time, the feature will also allow people to track down Facebook members via search engines such as Google.
Can you imagine what a boon this is going to be for debt recovery companies? The Inland Revenue Service? Anyone with a grudge?

Deleted yourself from Facebook? Man in Cham Valley that’s akin to burning your ski boots.
I logged into Facebook yesterday and there’s a highly visible notification about this change on their welcome page. It invites you to review what the public can see and hide yourself if you want. By default, the only thing people can see about you is a very small thumbnail profile image, your name, and they can browse your friends (I turned that last one off). They can also poke you (what the hell does poke really signify anyway?) and add you as a friend if they have an account.
More to the point though, is there a giant send-off tonight or what? Will be sorry to see you go, even if it’s super-temporary… the valley will miss you!
