Off the grid
I’ve been taking a bit of time away from the office for the past week and spending some more time in my flat in Les Houches which has no internet connection or phone. Coincidentally my mobile phone is also broken at the moment so I’ve been almost uncontactable for a while. I realised today that it’s actually made a nice change.
I wonder if we’ve really thought through how much mobile phones have changed our lives. I got my first phone about 8 or 9 years ago I suppose and since then I’ve never worn a watch or been uncontactable for long periods of time. Perhaps the fact that email got going around the same time has masked from us the effect the mobile has had. The chat is always about the internet and how that’s affecting us, but carrying a portable communication device allowing us constant contact with the people in our lives has drastically changed the way we live.
