What is a consultant?

A few weeks ago one of my friends said that she’d never really understood what a consultant was, or what they did. Today I heard a brilliant definition of one on the radio:
Consultant : Someone who borrows your watch to tell you the time

On being mistaken for an Englishman

I don’t like the English. One at a time, I don’t mind them. I’ve loved some of them. It’s their collective persona I can’t warm to: the lumpen and louty, coarse, unsubtle, beady-eyed, beefy-bummed herd of England.
The truth is—and perhaps this is a little unworthy, a bit shameful—I find England and the English embarrassing. Fundamentally [...]

Knowing right from wrong

Pretty easy, really. Wrong would be killing people. Lying, cheating, stealing… just destruction in general. Right is love, compassion, making other people and yourself happy.
The problem is that while you can define right and wrong easily enough, there are no rules. Only the prisons we make for ourselves.

More kit

Hmmmm, I’m going to need more kit. A helmet mounted camera for one thing. Pro quality microphones too. And an audio editing suite. A bigger, faster computer, probably a souped up mac. Some software too. And a new camera. A big, 3 chip pro one. Tripods. Lights. Underwater housing. Damn. Anyone out there got [...]

Haven’t written much recently because….

I got myself into a bit of a tough situation and didn’t really know what to do about it. I ended up taking the traditional, well known of approach of sticking my fingers in my ears, closing my eyes and ignoring the whole thing until it exploded.
I got to the point with the job I’m [...]

Squeamish people should not read this. Or look at the picture.

Following my post on Sunday about what to do with a rainy afternoon, my mate back in the UK filled me in with what he did with his Sunday arvo. He got his bell-end pierced. Nice.
He claims it didn’t hurt much. Just a searing pain for a second and then nothing. Not sure if I [...]

Sundays

Back in the office on a Sunday. It’s cold and wet here in the valley this weekend so it’s not like I’m missing anything in terms of climbing or swimming in the lake or anything. But still.

What do you do with a rainy Sunday afternoon? Me, I listen to the Archers omnibus. I’ve been listening [...]

Back. Mostly.

I’m back in front of my computer. A couple of day’s break was excellent, but I reckon a few weeks is what I really need. It’s been pretty full on since I returned from my last London trip a couple of months ago and I needed a holiday back then. What with setting up the [...]

Merde. Il a disparu.

Have you ever had one of those moments where you’ve simply had enough? You knows it. Those moments when you just want to get in the car and drive away, take a few unplanned days to yourself. Of course you have. but if you’ve got a family, kids, commitments, a job, in fact fuck it; [...]

Planning ABC

I had an odd day yesterday. It started in the morning when I finally got round to sorting out the folders of paperwork I had lying around in the X-Box room and put them back into the filing cabinet. The files about things that aren’t relevant any more (London council tax, closed bank accounts etc) [...]
