Booze

I grew up with an English education in booze. Drinking martini bianco by the river in my early teens, moving to the pub as soon as we could get away with it, drinking cider and beer, parties where people would bring spirits, and half the people there would be shouting europe at the sink by midnight.

In later years, spending lots of time in the pub. Building up tolerance to pints of beer, slowly developing tastes for stronger booze wine, dark rum, vodka at times, whiskey more and more.

Now I’m 30 I suppose I’ve refined my boozing to what’s right for me. This fairly constant life-long drug abuse of alcohol that’s so peculiar to the English is a very personal thing. At times I drink beer to continue an adrenaline high, maybe from skiing or driving. Just get a bit charged. Other times it’s a slow burn, red-wine type thing. Over a long meal, a bottle or two with food is a nice way to drink.

But at the moment, I’m in a different part of the cycle. That part where you’re happy to see the sun over the yard arm and break out a glass of wine at 5:30pm, closely followed by a few more, and then, well….. when you’re done you’re done, but you’re not worrying about it, just drinking yourself to sleep and having fun.

It means for the past 7 days I’ve been waking up with a hangover, but a shower, some coffee, water and food, and you’re right as rain by the time the sun’s over the yardarm again.

It doesn’t (of course) pay to do this often or for very long. But you know what? It’s fun, and I’m enjoying it.
