Haven’t written much recently because….

I got myself into a bit of a tough situation and didn’t really know what to do about it. I ended up taking the traditional, well known of approach of sticking my fingers in my ears, closing my eyes and ignoring the whole thing until it exploded.

I got to the point with the job I’m doing for the guys in London where I had burned out with it completely and couldn’t continue working on it. Unfortunately for them that coincided with a deadline they were trying to work to and that’s a problem.

So I went very quiet, got stressed, stopped answering my phone, stopped eating, sleeping and drank loads. People are fucking dumb aren’t they?

The bang is never as catastrophic as you imagine though. And things are sorted now. I’m handing over the development of the software I’ve built to a fresh pair of eyes, someone hungry, fresh and ready to bosh out the development needed. Phew. All I need is a release from the terrible roadblock, and the guys I work for have been great about it, really understanding. I feel bad that I misjudged their reaction, but you do when you’re mental. It would be nice to be stop being so flaky, but on the other hand, it’s a part of me. It’s why I’m a freelancer. Why I run my own business, and why I can’t settle.

I’m not much of a programmer you see. I can write code, but it’s only as a means to an end. I don’t enjoy it much. It happens I got paid more for coding than I did for the other arty crap I do with computers for the past couple of years, so I did that for a while, but for some reason I couldn’t code anymore. I’m burned out. I’m in the wrong kind of mindset.

So today, I turned off the TV and went and did something less boring instead. I made a film. It’s a shit film, but it’s the first I’ve made for a while, and I boshed the whole thing out in about 5 hours. I bought a monitor for my video editing suite, got everything set up and created the first bit of video content for www.chamonix-valley.com/video . First of many. I’m going to make films of climbing, skiing, parapente, boozing in bars, you name it. The key here is not the creativity, or brilliant film-making, but the speed and agility of getting the video content up onto the site, viewed by the audience. Quickly, inexpensively and in large quantities.
