Planning ABC
I had an odd day yesterday. It started in the morning when I finally got round to sorting out the folders of paperwork I had lying around in the X-Box room and put them back into the filing cabinet. The files about things that aren’t relevant any more (London council tax, closed bank accounts etc) go into the bottom drawer, and those that are still in use into the top drawer. I started to notice files I haven’t been thinking about for a while, and it got me thinking about the places the past year has taken me.
Over a year ago I had a plan A. I’d written a prototype piece of software called Listings Lab (hence the name of this blog). I had a business plan, and was looking for funding to finance the next 3 months of my life bringing it to market. Moving to France was a very B-like plan at the time. Maybe even C. Then a job came along and I saw a way to earn the money I needed to do plan A, which seemed safer than borrowing it. In 3 or 4 months I’d have the money, plus some much needed extra commercial experience to go back to plan A and make it work. Plan A became plan B, but only temporarily.
Somewhere along the line, moving to France became a reality and became plan A. The job stopped being about funding Listings Lab and started being about funding moving to Chamonix. In that respect, it’s achieved it’s aim and it’s time to exit gracefully.
After a period of very rapid change, which frankly at times has been a bit too rapid and overwhelming, I find myself looking back at all this and thinking that what I’ve actually done is to create a great environment to take a deep breath and do something really unique before I burn out completely as a developer and go and start a new career as a lumberjack. Suddenly everything makes more sense. It’s is a plan I’ve thought through in detail. It’s time to revert to plan A.
