Telecoms nightmares
France Telecom is a nationalized monopoly and one of the best reasons I’ve come across for NOT having nationalized monopolies.
Merde.
Over two weeks ago I ordered a phone line to be switched on for the office. It was really difficult to even get to that point, because frankly - no one who works for France telecom actually needs to do any work to keep their job it seems.
So I got a call 2 weeks ago now. The woman gave me my new telephone number and assured me my line would be set up within 48 hours. yeh right. So 2 weeks later I ask another guy, a french speaking businessman in Chamonix to give them a call and see what the deal is. Apparently everything is as it should be and the line might take anything up to 2 weeks to get up and running. So in the meantime I’m paying rent on an office I can’t use.
Not to worry…. I’ve still got a solid connection at the old flat (I’ve moved into the new one now). No. The storm the other day knocked out 80% of the connections in the valley on Friday and that includes me. There are pockets of connectivity around town, and some open networks I can use to pick up emails and chat on skype for an hour or so here and there, but I can’t work. I need to be connected to the VPN in London to actually develop, and for that I need a lot of non-portable computer equipment.
God knows when it will all be back on. The gossip around town is Wednesday. Just bloody marvelous.

well why not use it as an excuse to spend more time jumping off mountains, or head some where you can jump off boats for a couple of days?
Go on, you know it makes sense….
